Build the route
Build a leaf litter and tannins starter route
Use the bundle as a staged starter route: add leaves first, then introduce alder cones gradually while observing tint, clarity and livestock behaviour.
Product story
Leaf Litter + Tannins Starter Bundle – Catappa, Banana & Alder Cones Pack in use
A simple blackwater and biofilm starter bundle with Catappa leaves, Banana leaves and 30 g alder cones. It gives shrimp, snails, bettas and soft-water community aquariums leaf-litter grazing surfaces, natural cover, micro-habitats and a controllable tannin / humic boost without needing to guess a mix.
Why aquarists use it
Shrimp tanks / Caridina and Neocaridina, Snail tanks and biofilm grazers
What it does
It creates grazing surfaces, leaf-litter cover and a gradual amber-style botanical look when added in stages.
What it does not do
It does not force instant water changes or replace testing, maintenance and observation.

Essential details and safety
Use slowly, observe livestock and avoid chasing instant changes. BBA product pages are guidance for careful aquarium use, not veterinary or medical advice.
Preparation notes
- Rinse botanicals before use. Add the leaf litter first to create cover and grazing surfaces. Start with a small amount, especially in very soft or low-KH water. For alder cones, start with 5–8 cones, then add a few more over 3–7 days depending on the tint and effect you want. Add extra leaves gradually as top-up grazing surfaces when needed. Remove pieces if they break down heavily in lightly stocked tanks. Top up slowly rather than adding the whole bundle at once in small aquariums.
Safety notes
- For ornamental freshwater aquarium use only.
- Botanicals are natural habitat and enrichment tools, not substitutes for stable aquarium care.
- Not for human consumption.
- Keep away from children and pets.
- Natural products vary in size, colour and shape.
- Alder cones are sold by weight, so the number of cones may vary depending on cone size.
- A thin white biofilm on new botanicals is normal and often grazed by shrimp and snails.
- No instant pH promise and no livestock-care shortcut claim.
- Remove if livestock show stress.
Habitat visual story
A botanical aquarium should feel lived-in, not empty
These visual cards explain the habitat world around this product. They are separated from the product gallery above, so customers can distinguish the item from its ecological role.
Amber water supports a calmer blackwater mood.
Tint and shade soften exposed open water.
Colour works best as part of the whole scape.
Add slowly and watch the tank response.
Method reminders
Prepare, add gradually, observe
How should this be introduced?
Prepare as appropriate, add a small amount first and watch livestock and water clarity for 24-72 hours before adding more.
Is natural variation normal?
Yes. Botanical and prepared aquarium products can vary in size, colour, shape, texture, tint and breakdown speed.
Does this guarantee water parameter changes?
No. The BBA method is deliberately careful: products can support a route, but they do not promise instant pH, GH or KH results.
