Category Mini Guides

Understand the category before choosing the product.

Use these mini buying guides to choose between leaves, pods, starter boxes, foods, root tabs, water support and hardscape without treating every tank the same.

How to use this page

This is guidance, not a replacement for the shop.

Read the category notes first, then use Box Finder or Starter Routes if you are unsure. Choose by livestock, tank stability and risk level before choosing by colour or shape.

Mini buying guides

Choose the category that matches the job.

Each category has a different role. Start with the safest role for the tank, then browse products inside that category.

Leaves / leaf litter

Gentle surfaces, grazing and natural breakdown.

Leaves are useful for grazing surfaces, shrimp and snail interest, leaf-litter cover and a gradual botanical feel. Some leaves can tint water slowly and will break down over time.

  • Start with small amounts in nano, shrimp and soft-water tanks.
  • Expect shape, colour, size and breakdown speed to vary naturally.
  • Remove excess material if the tank becomes messy or livestock react badly.
Pods, wood & shelter botanicals

Structure, hiding places and biofilm surfaces.

Pods, wood and shelter pieces help create natural detail, resting spots, territory breaks and grazing surfaces. Some pieces float at first and pale biofilm can be a normal early stage.

  • Add larger pieces carefully in small aquariums.
  • Position pieces so livestock cannot become trapped.
  • Expect natural variation in shape, texture, floating time and tint strength.
Starter Boxes

The easiest guided starting point.

Starter boxes are best for customers who want a curated route instead of building a basket from scratch. The pack gives direction, but not everything must be added at once.

  • Use less than the full pack first in shrimp, nano or soft-water tanks.
  • Let livestock and water clarity guide the next addition.
  • Use Box Finder if tank size, goal or livestock type is unclear.
Foods & grazing support

Supplementary feeding, not a substitute for stability.

Foods, grazing sticks and feeding support should be used lightly. They can support suitable shrimp, snails and fish, but overfeeding can affect water quality quickly in small aquariums.

  • Feed lightly and remove excess food.
  • Do not overfeed shrimp or nano tanks.
  • Observe livestock behaviour and water clarity after feeding.
Root Tabs / plant support

Targeted support for rooted plants.

Root tabs and plant support products are for planted aquariums where rooted plants need substrate feeding. They are not a fix for every plant or tank problem.

  • Use as directed and do not overdose.
  • Bury root tabs properly where relevant.
  • Ask BBA if livestock, substrate or plant type makes you unsure.
Water support / minerals / filter media

Test first, change gradually.

Water support, minerals and filter media should fit a clear tank goal. They are practical support tools, not automatic control over pH, GH or KH.

  • Test water before changing support products.
  • Change one thing at a time where possible.
  • Use only when the product fits the tank goal and livestock needs.
Hardscape

Structure that must be safe in the tank.

Hardscape can help create territory breaks, visual depth and planted-tank structure. Natural pieces vary, so choose with livestock safety and tank size in mind.

  • Rinse first and position securely.
  • Check that pieces do not trap livestock or block flow.
  • Combine with botanical additions gradually rather than all at once.
