What to expect

Normal changes after adding aquarium botanicals.

Botanical aquariums can change slowly: tint, floating pieces, biofilm and leaf breakdown are often part of the process. The important part is knowing what is normal and when to pause.

Calm first response

Do not panic at every natural change. Do not ignore livestock distress.

Start small, prepare botanicals properly and observe for 24-72 hours, especially in shrimp, nano and soft-water tanks.

Amber tint can be normal Some pieces float first Biofilm can appear Leaves break down Stop if livestock reacts badly

Normal signs and warning signs

Read this before adding more.

Natural material varies. This page helps customers understand what they may see in the tank and when to remove material or contact BBA.

A

Amber or tea-coloured water

Tannins and humic substances can tint water from pale gold to deeper tea tones. Darker water is not automatically bad, but start small in shrimp, nano and soft-water tanks.

B

Floating pods or leaves

Dry leaves, pods, bark and wood may float at first. Soaking or hot-steeping can help. Let pieces sink in their own time and do not force a whole pack into the tank at once.

C

White biofilm

A white or clear film can appear on wood, pods and botanicals. Shrimp and snails often graze on it. Remove material if there is foul smell, livestock distress or uncontrolled growth.

D

Leaf breakdown

Leaves naturally soften and break down. Grazers may feed on the surface as the leaf matures. Remove leftovers if they become excessive, messy or more than the filter can handle.

E

Earthy smell

Dry natural botanicals can smell earthy, woody or leaf-like. A foul or rotten smell is not normal. Rinse and prepare pieces before use, and remove anything that smells wrong.

F

Different tannin release

Each natural piece is different. Size, age, density, preparation and water conditions affect how quickly colour appears. Do not expect identical colour from every pack.

G

Livestock behaviour

Grazing, exploring, resting under leaves and hiding can be normal. Gasping, frantic swimming, rapid distress or deaths are not normal. Stop adding and check water if livestock reacts badly.

H

When to remove botanicals

Remove or pause if there is foul smell, unusual cloudiness with livestock distress, ammonia or nitrite concern, biofilm getting out of control, or livestock behaving badly.

When to contact BBA

Contact BBA if you are unsure how much to use, worried about a shrimp or nano tank, confused about preparation, or unsure which product or order item you are looking at.

Choose the next step

Match what you have read to your tank.

If the normal signs sound manageable, move into a guided route. If the tank is unstable or you feel unsure, pause and ask first.

Go ahead slowly

If this sounds right for your tank

Start with a route, use the Box Finder for tank-size guidance, then browse the full shop when the setup direction is clear.

Pause first

If your tank is unstable or you are unsure

Do not guess or add more to a stressed tank. Check the suitability guide and contact BBA with tank details before ordering.
