Aquariums were part of my life long before BBA existed.

Blackwater Botanical Aquariums grew from my lifelong passion, beginning in childhood, and nearly 38 years of practical fishkeeping. The products came after the experience, not the other way around.

It began in childhood and never left.

My first aquarium arrived during my early school years. Guppies, swordtails and mollies created the first fascination, with angelfish following later. My parents naturally shared the care at that young age; by around ten, I was taking increasing personal responsibility for the aquariums and fish.

That interest never became a forgotten childhood hobby. Across nearly 38 years, keeping fish has remained part of my everyday life and has become steadily more practical, demanding and connected to complete aquatic systems.

From keeping fish to building systems

The hobby became deeper, larger and more connected.

Over time, my early aquariums developed into substantial hands-on reef and Amazonian-style blackwater systems. I kept and observed discus, catfish, shrimp, wild Amazonian fish and diverse aquatic communities, learning how water, structure, plants, food and animal behaviour affect one another.

That experience shifted my focus from keeping individual fish to building complete environments: roots that divide territory, leaves that change and soften, open water that preserves movement, and planted margins that connect life above and below the surface.

Why BBA exists

The products came after the experience.

BBA is a continuation of my lifelong aquarium involvement, not the source of it. I created the business to place carefully selected natural materials beside the preparation, cautions and written guidance needed to use them responsibly.

That history shaped the BBA Method: understand the intended role, prepare the material, protect stability, add gradually, observe the animals and stop when the evidence does not support a confident promise.

Experience should improve the questions, not replace the evidence.

You can describe your tank size, livestock, water conditions and what you hope to achieve before buying. I can then answer in writing, explain a suitable route or say honestly when the available evidence is not enough.

My long experience does not replace testing, observation, stable husbandry or species-specific professional advice where it is appropriate. It supports careful decisions without pretending that one product can guarantee an instant result.
