Build the route

Build a removable porous-media route

Use lava rock as a porous support media, keeping it cleanable, removable and separate from botanical dosing decisions.

Product story

Natural Volcanic Lava Rock in use

Natural porous 1–2cm volcanic lava rock for aquarium and pond biological filter media, media bags, ponds, terrariums and natural aquascaping.

Why aquarists use it

Aquarium keepers wanting natural biological filter media, Pond and koi pond filtration setups

What it does

It supports a more natural, observed aquarium route when introduced gradually and used alongside stable husbandry.

What it does not do

It does not replace stable husbandry, diagnose livestock problems, cure disease or promise instant water-parameter changes.

Essential details and safety

Use slowly, observe livestock and avoid chasing instant changes. BBA product pages are guidance for careful aquarium use, not veterinary or medical advice.

Preparation notes

  • Rinse the lava rock thoroughly before use until the water runs clear.
  • Place the lava rock inside the included mesh/media bag when used as filter media.
  • Put the bag in a high-flow area of your filter, sump or pond filter.
  • Avoid packing the media too tightly so water can flow through and around it.
  • Remove and rinse during normal filter maintenance when needed.
  • For aquascaping, position pieces securely and keep sharp edges away from delicate fish.

Safety notes

  • Rinse thoroughly before use; natural lava rock may release dust during packing and transport.
  • Natural volcanic stone varies in size, shape, colour and texture.
  • Approximate stone size: 1–2cm.
  • Some pieces may have sharp edges; position carefully around delicate fish, bottom dwellers or burrowing species.
  • Best used in a media bag or filter basket where water can flow through the media.
  • Do not pack too tightly inside the filter.
  • No guaranteed claims are made to remove ammonia, nitrite or nitrate.
  • No instant pH promise and no livestock treatment claim.
  • Remove if livestock show stress.

Method reminders

Prepare, add gradually, observe

How should this be introduced?

Prepare as appropriate, add a small amount first and watch livestock and water clarity for 24-72 hours before adding more.

Is natural variation normal?

Yes. Botanical and prepared aquarium products can vary in size, colour, shape, texture, tint and breakdown speed.

Does this guarantee water parameter changes?

No. The BBA method is deliberately careful: products can support a route, but they do not promise instant pH, GH or KH results.

End route

Not sure how much to add?

Use the route guidance before building a heavy botanical layout, especially for shrimp, nano and soft-water tanks.
