Build the route

Build a tidy filter-media support route

Use loose filter media in a removable, observable way, keeping it separate from botanical dose and livestock-care decisions.

It can be used as part of a tidy filter-media route where media can be contained, removed and observed.

What it does not do

It does not replace maintenance, stable cycling, testing or careful aquarium husbandry.

Before adding

Essential details and safety

Use slowly, observe livestock and avoid chasing instant changes. BBA product pages are guidance for careful aquarium use, not veterinary or medical advice.

Preparation preview

  • Rinse the zeolite thoroughly before use to remove dust.
  • Place the zeolite inside a mesh/media bag.
  • Put the bag in a high-flow area of your filter, sump or pond filter.
  • Test ammonia regularly, especially during ammonia spikes or new tank setups.
  • Replace or recharge the zeolite when it becomes exhausted.
  • Avoid packing the media too tightly so water can flow through it.

Safety notes

  • For freshwater aquarium, pond, hydroponic and plant media use only.
  • Not recommended for saltwater, brackish or marine aquariums unless the product is specifically intended for that use.
  • Do not add salt or use salt treatments while zeolite is in the freshwater system.
  • Use water tests to monitor ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
  • Zeolite helps with ammonia / ammonium but does not replace a properly cycled biological filter.
  • Zeolite has limited capacity and does not work forever.
  • Remove, replace or recharge zeolite once it becomes exhausted.
  • No instant pH promise and no livestock treatment claim.
  • Remove if livestock show stress.

Method reminders

Prepare, add gradually, observe

How should this be introduced?

Prepare as appropriate, add a small amount first and watch livestock and water clarity for 24-72 hours before adding more.

Is natural variation normal?

Yes. Botanical and prepared aquarium products can vary in size, colour, shape, texture, tint and breakdown speed.

Does this guarantee water parameter changes?

No. The BBA method is deliberately careful: products can support a route, but they do not promise instant pH, GH or KH results.

End route

Not sure how much to add?

Use the route guidance before building a heavy botanical layout, especially for shrimp, nano and soft-water tanks.
