Build the route

Build a slow blackwater-support route

Use peat balls as a contained support item, keeping them removable and avoiding any promise of instant parameter changes.

Premium Blackwater Peat Balls in aquarium use

Product story

Premium Blackwater Peat Balls in use

Shaped peat-based blackwater filter medium for soft-water tropical aquariums, helping create a gentle amber tint while supporting softer, mildly acidic conditions.

Why aquarists use it

Blackwater and soft-water tropical aquariums, Discus, angelfish, neon tetras, rasboras and dwarf cichlids

What it does

It can support tannin-style colour and humic character when used slowly in a removable filter-media position.

What it does not do

It does not instantly lower pH, guarantee parameter control or make any tank safe without monitoring.

Essential details and safety

Use slowly, observe livestock and avoid chasing instant changes. BBA product pages are guidance for careful aquarium use, not veterinary or medical advice.

Preparation notes

  • Start conservatively, especially in soft water or low-KH systems.
  • Place the Peat Balls inside a filter basket, media bag or filter media compartment where water flows through them steadily.
  • Monitor KH, pH and water colour over time.
  • Adjust the amount gradually until the desired blackwater tint and soft-water effect is reached.
  • Replace or refresh as the effect reduces over time.

Safety notes

  • This product will colour the water brown / tea colour and can alter pH and hardness.
  • The effect can be stronger in soft water or low-KH systems; start gradually and monitor water parameters.
  • Carbon filters, Purigen and similar chemical media can reduce tannins and visible water colour.
  • Every aquarium behaves differently, so adjust the amount slowly based on test results and livestock response.
  • This is a natural peat product, so colour, intensity and release rate can vary.
  • Intended to help create natural soft-water and blackwater conditions; it is not a medication.
  • For ornamental freshwater aquarium use only.
  • No instant pH promise and no livestock treatment claim.
  • Remove if livestock show stress.

Method reminders

Prepare, add gradually, observe

How should this be introduced?

Prepare as appropriate, add a small amount first and watch livestock and water clarity for 24-72 hours before adding more.

Is natural variation normal?

Yes. Botanical and prepared aquarium products can vary in size, colour, shape, texture, tint and breakdown speed.

Does this guarantee water parameter changes?

No. The BBA method is deliberately careful: products can support a route, but they do not promise instant pH, GH or KH results.

End route

Not sure how much to add?

Use the route guidance before building a heavy botanical layout, especially for shrimp, nano and soft-water tanks.
