Build the route
Build a full blackwater starter route
Layer the leaf litter first, then place pods and cholla for structure, adding cones gradually for measured colour and surface detail.
Product story
Blackwater Botanical Bundle – Leaf Litter, Cones, Pods & Cholla in use
A ready-to-go leaf litter, cones, pods and cholla blackwater starter bundle for shrimp tanks and natural freshwater aquariums, giving colour, cover, structure and grazing surfaces in one practical pack.
Why aquarists use it
Shrimp tanks, Blackwater aquariums
What it does
It supports a more natural, observed aquarium route when introduced gradually and used alongside stable husbandry.
What it does not do
It does not replace stable husbandry, diagnose livestock problems, cure disease or promise instant water-parameter changes.

Essential details and safety
Use slowly, observe livestock and avoid chasing instant changes. BBA product pages are guidance for careful aquarium use, not veterinary or medical advice.
Preparation notes
- Rinse everything before use. Start gradually, especially in small tanks or very soft / low-KH water. Add a few Catappa leaves first, then build up slowly if more leaf litter is wanted. Add alder cones in stages over 3–7 days to control the tannin effect. Rinse pods and cholla well before use. Optional: pre-soak pods and cholla to help them waterlog and sink faster. White biofilm may appear early on and is normal, often eaten by shrimp and snails. In hard water with higher KH, pH shift is usually smaller; the main effects are colour, natural behaviour and grazing benefits.
Safety notes
- For ornamental freshwater aquarium use only.
- Botanicals are natural habitat and enrichment tools, not substitutes for stable aquarium care.
- Not for human consumption.
- Keep away from children and pets.
- Natural products vary in size, shape, colour and texture.
- Botanicals may release tannins and soften the visual tone of the water.
- Effects vary depending on tank size, KH, pH, filtration and how much is used.
- No instant pH promise and no livestock-care shortcut claim.
- Remove if livestock show stress.
Habitat visual story
A botanical aquarium should feel lived-in, not empty
These visual cards explain the habitat world around this product. They are separated from the product gallery above, so customers can distinguish the item from its ecological role.
Pods break up the floor with natural structure.
Edges and hollows create small shelter points.
Texture darkens into the botanical layout.
Surfaces invite grazing and investigation.
Method reminders
Prepare, add gradually, observe
How should this be introduced?
Prepare as appropriate, add a small amount first and watch livestock and water clarity for 24-72 hours before adding more.
Is natural variation normal?
Yes. Botanical and prepared aquarium products can vary in size, colour, shape, texture, tint and breakdown speed.
Does this guarantee water parameter changes?
No. The BBA method is deliberately careful: products can support a route, but they do not promise instant pH, GH or KH results.
