Their hollow pod shape makes them useful as natural hides, micro-territories and sheltered areas for shrimp, fry and shy fish.

They also add strong visual interest in leaf-litter zones, especially when combined with leaves, cones, bark tubes and driftwood.

As the pods age in the aquarium, their surfaces can develop biofilm and microfauna that shrimp and snails naturally graze on.

Biofilm and water chemistry notes

White biofilm note A thin white biofilm on new botanicals is normal and usually harmless. Shrimp and snails often graze on it. If any piece becomes unsightly, simply remove it and replace with a fresh one.

Water chemistry note In very soft water, tannins and mild organic acids may have a stronger visible effect. In harder tap water with higher KH, pH change is usually much smaller because the water resists change. Add slowly and monitor sensitive setups.

PREPARATION & SAFETY

PREPARATION

  • Rinse all botanicals thoroughly before use. Do not use soap, detergents or household chemicals.
  • If needed, pre-soak harder pieces for 1–7 days to help them sink and to reduce the strongest initial tint.
  • A white or translucent biofilm may appear as botanicals begin to soften. This is a normal part of botanical decomposition and is commonly grazed by shrimp and snails.

SAFETY

  • Add botanicals gradually, particularly in small aquariums or very soft, low-KH water.
  • Natural pieces vary in size, shape, colour and texture.
  • Botanicals are not a treatment and do not guarantee a specific pH, GH or KH change.
  • Remove or reduce botanical material if livestock show signs of stress.
  • For aquatic and naturalistic hobby enclosures only. Not for human consumption. Keep unused material away from children and non-target pets.
  • Individual botanical pieces are not a complete substrate or complete diet for enclosure animals.
  • Botanicals may release tannins and soften the visual tone of the water.
  • Effects vary depending on tank size, KH, pH, filtration and how many pods are used.
