Build the route

Build a step-fruit structure route

Use Step Fruit as a structural botanical accent, then soften the surrounding floor with measured leaves if the tank suits it.

Product story

Step Fruit (African Flame Tree) – Natural Botanical Structure in use

Step Fruit (African Flame Tree) botanical pieces, approx. 20–25cm, used as instant impact structure, shelter detail and biofilm surface in shrimp, betta, botanical and blackwater freshwater aquariums.

Why aquarists use it

Shrimp tanks and shrimp colonies, Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp

What it does

It adds structure and inspection surfaces that can sit within a broader leaf and pod route.

What it does not do

It is not a universal shelter for every species; match the size and shape to the livestock and tank.

Essential details and safety

Use slowly, observe livestock and avoid chasing instant changes. BBA product pages are guidance for careful aquarium use, not veterinary or medical advice.

Preparation notes

  • Rinse before use. Do not use soap or chemicals.
  • Optional: pre-soak for 1–7 days to help sinking and reduce the initial tannin release.
  • Add gradually in smaller tanks, very soft water or low-KH systems.
  • Position safely so shrimp, fry and small fish can explore and graze freely.
  • Some pieces may float at first and sink later once waterlogged.
  • Remove or replace if the piece becomes damaged, trapped with debris, or unsuitable for your livestock.

Safety notes

  • For ornamental freshwater aquarium use only.
  • This is a natural botanical habitat item, not a medication.
  • Not for human consumption.
  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Natural pieces vary in colour, size, shape, texture, curve and seed-chamber detail.
  • Approximate size range is a guide only.
  • Some pieces may float at first and sink later. Pre-soaking can help.
  • No instant pH promise and no livestock treatment claim.
  • Remove if livestock show stress.

Method reminders

Prepare, add gradually, observe

How should this be introduced?

Prepare as appropriate, add a small amount first and watch livestock and water clarity for 24-72 hours before adding more.

Is natural variation normal?

Yes. Botanical and prepared aquarium products can vary in size, colour, shape, texture, tint and breakdown speed.

Does this guarantee water parameter changes?

No. The BBA method is deliberately careful: products can support a route, but they do not promise instant pH, GH or KH results.

End route

Not sure how much to add?

Use the route guidance before building a heavy botanical layout, especially for shrimp, nano and soft-water tanks.
