Build the route

Build a cones, pods and cholla route

Start with the cholla and pods as structure, then add alder cones in stages so tannins and grazing surfaces remain controlled.

Product story

Blackwater Botanical Bundle – Cones, Pods & Cholla in use

A simple high-impact cones, pods and cholla starter bundle for shrimp tanks and blackwater-style freshwater aquariums, with gentle tannins, biofilm-friendly grazing surfaces and natural hiding structure.

Why aquarists use it

Shrimp tanks, Neocaridina and Caridina setups

What it does

It supports a more natural, observed aquarium route when introduced gradually and used alongside stable husbandry.

What it does not do

It does not replace stable husbandry, diagnose livestock problems, cure disease or promise instant water-parameter changes.

Essential details and safety

Use slowly, observe livestock and avoid chasing instant changes. BBA product pages are guidance for careful aquarium use, not veterinary or medical advice.

Preparation notes

  • Rinse everything before use. Start with a few alder cones and add gradually over 3–7 days, especially in soft or low-KH water. Rinse pods and cholla well before use. Optional: pre-soak pods and cholla to help them waterlog and sink faster. White biofilm may appear early on and is normal, usually eaten by shrimp and snails. In harder water with higher KH, pH change is usually smaller; you will mainly get colour, natural behaviour and grazing benefits.

Safety notes

  • For ornamental freshwater aquarium use only.
  • Botanicals are natural habitat and enrichment tools, not substitutes for stable aquarium care.
  • Not for human consumption.
  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Natural products vary in size, shape and colour.
  • Botanicals may release tannins and soften the visual tone of the water.
  • Effects vary depending on tank size, KH, pH, filtration and how much is used.
  • No instant pH promise and no livestock-care shortcut claim.
  • Remove if livestock show stress.

A botanical aquarium should feel lived-in, not empty

These visual cards explain the habitat world around this product. They are separated from the product gallery above, so customers can distinguish the item from its ecological role.

Method reminders

Prepare, add gradually, observe

How should this be introduced?

Prepare as appropriate, add a small amount first and watch livestock and water clarity for 24-72 hours before adding more.

Is natural variation normal?

Yes. Botanical and prepared aquarium products can vary in size, colour, shape, texture, tint and breakdown speed.

Does this guarantee water parameter changes?

No. The BBA method is deliberately careful: products can support a route, but they do not promise instant pH, GH or KH results.

End route

Not sure how much to add?

Use the route guidance before building a heavy botanical layout, especially for shrimp, nano and soft-water tanks.
