Product story

Mahogany Slices (Swietenia spp.) – Natural Botanical Slices in use

Mahogany Slices (Swietenia spp.) natural botanical slices, approx. 3–4cm, used as natural decor, small shelter details, line-of-sight breaks and biofilm grazing surfaces in shrimp, fry, betta, biotope-style and blackwater freshwater aquariums.

Why aquarists use it

Shrimp tanks and shrimp colonies, Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp

What it does

It supports a more natural, observed aquarium route when introduced gradually and used alongside stable husbandry.

What it does not do

It does not replace stable husbandry, diagnose livestock problems, cure disease or promise instant water-parameter changes.

Essential details and safety

Use slowly, observe livestock and avoid chasing instant changes. BBA product pages are guidance for careful aquarium use, not veterinary or medical advice.

Preparation notes

  • Rinse before use. Do not use soap or chemicals.
  • Optional: pre-soak for 1–7 days to help sinking and reduce the initial tannin release.
  • Add gradually in smaller tanks, very soft water or low-KH systems.
  • Place slices among leaf litter, pods, bark and wood where shrimp, fry or shy fish can explore and graze.
  • Some pieces may float at first and sink later once waterlogged.
  • Remove or replace if any piece becomes damaged, trapped with debris, or unsuitable for your livestock.

Safety notes

  • For ornamental freshwater aquarium use only.
  • This is a natural botanical habitat item, not a livestock-care shortcut.
  • Not for human consumption.
  • Keep away from children and pets.
  • Natural pieces vary in colour, size, shape, cut, surface texture and thickness.
  • Approximate size range is a guide only.
  • Some pieces may float at first and sink later. Pre-soaking can help.
  • No instant pH promise and no livestock-care shortcut claim.
  • Remove if livestock show stress.

Method reminders

Prepare, add gradually, observe

How should this be introduced?

Prepare as appropriate, add a small amount first and watch livestock and water clarity for 24-72 hours before adding more.

Is natural variation normal?

Yes. Botanical and prepared aquarium products can vary in size, colour, shape, texture, tint and breakdown speed.

Does this guarantee water parameter changes?

No. The BBA method is deliberately careful: products can support a route, but they do not promise instant pH, GH or KH results.

End route

Not sure how much to add?

Use the route guidance before building a heavy botanical layout, especially for shrimp, nano and soft-water tanks.
