Meet the Inhabitants: 24 New BBA Species Guides

A convincing habitat starts with understanding the animal. We have added 24 detailed species profiles to the BBA Knowledge Centre, connecting the inspiration of BBA Worlds with practical guidance on the inhabitants themselves.

Four groups, 24 individual stories

Meet six frogs, six crabs, six geckos and lizards, and six terrestrial invertebrates. From a colourful dyeing poison dart frog to a fully aquatic Thai micro crab, the new guides explore animals with very different ways of living.

Each profile brings together identification, natural habitat, adult size, enclosure planning, environmental conditions, feeding, behaviour, reproduction and practical care questions. Sources and useful comparisons help you look beyond a common name or an attractive photograph.

From a World to a species plan

BBA Worlds lets you explore the structure of a habitat: water, roots, leaf layers, cover and the transition onto land. The relevant Worlds now lead directly to these new inhabitants, with return links so you can move between the scene and the species guide.

The animals are separate possibilities to research, not a ready-made community. A general layout must be adapted to the chosen species: an aquatic crab, a climbing gecko and a terrestrial woodlouse need different conditions, space and maintenance.

Choose materials for the job they do

Contextual product links and links beside the images connect suitable BBA leaves, pods, wood, shelters and botanical selections with the role discussed in the article. Compare the actual material, its dimensions and preparation with the needs of your animal.

These are habitat-material choices, not complete animal-care kits. Decorative wood does not replace a detritivore’s feeding substrate, and a photograph does not establish that different animals can live together. BBA supplies the materials; the species plan comes first.

159 free-to-read materials, one connected collection

The Knowledge Centre now contains 159 public materials, including the existing fish, shrimp and snail profiles, botanical-care articles and practical habitat projects. Search by common or scientific name, or choose a topic to find the guidance you need.

Start with BBA Worlds for inspiration, then use the linked species profiles and construction guides to turn an appealing idea into a considered plan. All articles are available to read without an account.
